3 Tips for Proper Boiler Maintenance – What to Know

Pressure check by Grampian Boiler Services

When a boiler is finally installed, many people assume that it is going to continue working to its fullest for many years to come. While this might be true, some forget that boilers still require maintenance to function at its maximum potential for as long as possible. In fact, not many realise that putting effort into caring for a boiler will help them save time and money in the long run.

With that said, how do you keep your boiler in good condition to allow it to perform at its best? Here are a few tips you can keep in mind:

1. Check the pressure

Once in a while, you should check the pressure inside your boiler. If the pressure is too low, this means that there isn’t enough water. This can mean that the boiler will not run as efficiently as you expect it to, and if it goes unaddressed long enough, it might become damaged beyond repair.

To avoid this problem, ensure that you check the pressure gauge regularly. Usually, your boiler manual will have instructions to guide you on how to do it and show you the acceptable readings. If you find that the gauge displays a lower number than what’s normal, have the machine fixed by an expert.

2. Clean the insides and outsides

When cleaning the boiler, you will need to ensure that the insides are free from any foreign material. This means you should be looking around for anything that may be clogging the system, as this can restrict airflow and damage the boiler. At the same time, you should be checking for limescale that will impede the boiler’s efficiency. If you find that limescale deposits are present, have them removed by professionals.

As for the exterior, you should ensure that the room the boiler’s in does not have any objects that restrict airflow. Also, ensure that the place is free from any flammable substances, such as gas. That is because the boiler generates heat, and putting it near a combustible material is never a good idea.

3. Release the air from the radiator

One of the more common problems your boiler can run into is a radiator with trapped air inside. This causes the boiler to work harder, meaning that it has to use more energy to generate heat, wasting your money in the process.

To check whether or not there is trapped air in your radiator, you can place your hand near it to feel the temperature. If you find that the top part of the radiator is much warmer than the bottom, then there is probably trapped air inside. To fix this, you will need to bleed the radiator. You can either hire a professional to do this or take it upon yourself.

These are just some of the reasons you need to ensure your boiler is well-maintained. Put simply, you want to make sure that your boiler is in tip-top condition to maximise the money you are putting into it to keep it running. Additionally, making sure that it’s well-maintained often reduces the number of repair jobs you might have to carry out, saving time and money in the process.

With that said, if there is any problem with your boiler, we highly recommend that you work with professionals. That way, they will be able to carry out the fixes as well as discover any other problems along the way that you should know about.
